Bio
"Acoustic Vaudeville" first began as a regular Tuesday night show at the now legendary
Café Largo in Los Angeles. Aimee Mann and Michael Penn enlisted the aid
of several vanguard comedians to step in and provide the in-between banter that
the pair claimed to be unskilled in. When the couple decided to launch a national
tour, they wanted to re-create the intimacy of the Largo shows. Throughout their
yearlong tour, the couple were joined by comedians including Janeane Garafolo,
Andy Kindler, Paul Tomkins, David Cross (Mr. Show, Just Shoot Me) and Patton Oswalt
(King of Queens).
The tour, called "an intimate caberet" by Daily Variety, was heralded for it's
innovation, with the two sharing the stage, trading the spotlight back and forth
as each sung their own songs throughout the concert. Perhaps the Boston Globe
describes the show the best as "a new form of entertainment...they seamlessly
meshed their own songs...interwoven with jokes from a stand up comedian ...whatever
you call it- the term bohemian vaudeville might do- the effect is totally engaging.
Called "...exquisite.." (Village Voice), the Acoustic Vaudeville Tour sold out
theaters throughout the country.
